hand.

Colt's bullet drilling into Becky, high in her center body mass.

Red's bullet slammed into Colt's gun, ripping it free from his hand. It flew across the room and clattered to the concrete.

Colt grabbed his hand and dropped to one knee. For a moment no one moved. And then Red

released Becky and let her slump to the ground.

"You killed her!" Pinkus cried.

"Not true," Red said. "But not bad. There's only one way for any of you to survive the day and save a bunch of old folks from wicked things. I'm giving you exactly six minutes to get back into the library to finish the game you started."

Red moved back, stepped to his left behind the door, and was gone.

Wendy was the first out of the cell, rushing past Colt to Becky's fallen body. She hit the light switch. Light stuttered, then flooded the room. Becky's white blouse was turning slowly red. It was almost as if Red really had crawled inside her and was now leaking out.

A single glance at the weapon on the ground told Colt that it was destroyed. "Stop the bleeding,"

he said, running for the first aid closet in the adjoining room. He came back with some gauze.

The other three had come out of the cell now and were staring at the body. Wendy had ripped Becky's shirt open to expose a puncture below her right shoulder.

"Unless I'm wrong, it's a flesh wound," Colt said. He tossed her the gauze. "She's out with the pain, but she'll be fine. Shove some of this in the wound, but be quick."

"What do we do?" Pinkus asked.

"What he's forcing us to do."

"Are you nuts? I'm not going back there."

"Suit yourself," Colt said. "But I can guarantee you he'll put a slug in your head, haul your dead body back to the library, and then continue with the rest of us."

They all looked at him, knowing he had spoken nothing but truth.

Colt turned and strode into the station.

Wendy started to protest. "Wait ..."

"I'll be right back," he said.

"Where you going?"

"To get some firepower."

They ran from the station, five in a row, led by Colt, who'd grabbed five pistols from the armory.

They would be nearly useless in unskilled hands against Red, he pointed out, more harmful than good. But it was clear he had an idea.

The thought of a weapon in Wendy's hands wasn't unappealing. There were risks—Pinkus could up and shoot Nicole, for example. But if Colt could live with that risk, so could she.

Carey and Nicole took their guns without bothering to look at them. Pinkus kept looking at the triggering mechanism, but he didn't do much more. Only Wendy seemed to know what to do

with the gun after Colt's quick lesson in the library.

Red had destroyed the radio in the station. And the one in Colt's cruiser. No other cars were in the lot.

"Where is everyone?" Wendy asked. "I've never seen it so empty."

"Something's happening," Colt said, firing the car. A man ran past on the street, and he swung the cruiser around, giving chase.
